About P01 files
The .p01 extension is a classic example of a "collision" format, used by completely unrelated industries for different technical purposes. Most commonly, you will encounter this file in one of two contexts: as a vector plot file generated by Allplan (a BIM/CAD solution by Nemetschek), or as a numbered segment of a split archive or disk image (often associated with Roxio Toast or Parchive recovery sets).
The Problem:
If your file is from Allplan, it contains precise 2D or 3D architectural engineering data intended for plotting (printing). These files are highly proprietary. You cannot open them in standard image viewers or even most generic CAD tools like AutoCAD, creating a significant barrier for clients or contractors who don't own the expensive Allplan software.
Alternatively, if you found this file alongside others named .p00, .p02, or .rar, it is likely a Split Archive Segment. In this scenario, the .p01 file is useless on its own - it is just a slice of a larger binary pie. Users often fail to open these because they try to unzip the .p01 file directly, rather than starting the extraction process from the master file (usually .exe, .rar, or .toast).
The Solution:
- For CAD/Allplan: The most practical conversion target is PDF. Converting a .p01 plot file to PDF allows you to share architectural drawings with clients for review without requiring them to install specialized BIM software. For further editing in other CAD programs, converting to DXF or DWG is the industry standard.
- For Archives: You generally do not "convert" a split segment. Instead, you must ensure all parts (Part 01, Part 02, etc.) are in the same folder and use a tool like 7-Zip or WinRAR to "join" or extract the original contents (often an ISO or DMG).
- For Medical/Data: A subset of these files are Abbott PRISM blood screening results. These are raw data files encoded in UTF-16 and are strictly for use within specific medical laboratory information systems; they should not be converted online due to privacy and format rigidity.
Convert.Guru analyzes your P01 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted P00, PCB, BIN, TOAST, CL5 and BDM files.
The P01 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our P01 converter.
