About NLM files

A .NLM file is most commonly a legacy Nokia logo or picture message. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, users created and transferred these low-resolution, monochromatic bitmaps to Nokia feature phones using software like Nokia Logo Manager. In scientific and medical workflows, a .NLM file is an archive containing UMLS (Unified Medical Language System) Metathesaurus data used by the National Library of Medicine.

The main disadvantage of the .NLM image format is its complete obsolescence. As a proprietary image format designed for 20-year-old hardware, modern operating systems, image editors, and web browsers cannot natively open Nokia logo files. They lack color depth, modern metadata, and cross-platform compatibility. The UMLS data variants are simply ZIP files renamed with a .nlm extension, which breaks association with standard extraction utilities and creates unnecessary confusion.
