About BIBTEX files

A .bibtex file is a plain text database used to store bibliographic citation data for the LaTeX document preparation system. Researchers and academics use these files to organize references - such as books, articles, and conferences - using standard BibTeX entry types. Common reference management software like JabRef, Zotero, and Mendeley can natively read and export this format. However, the .bibtex format has severe practical disadvantages outside the academic typesetting environment. It relies on a highly rigid syntax of curly braces and tags. A single missing comma or unmatched brace will break the compilation process. It cannot be opened by standard web browsers, is incredibly frustrating to read natively, and requires a LaTeX compiler to generate a visually readable document. Furthermore, sharing a .bibtex file with someone who uses Microsoft Word instead of LaTeX usually results in confusion, as Word cannot directly parse the citations without an external plugin. To overcome these limitations, you must convert the file. If you need to view the data in a spreadsheet like Microsoft Excel, convert to CSV. For importing citations into non-LaTeX reference managers or standard word processors, convert to RIS or XML. If you just want a readable list of references for archiving or printing, convert directly to PDF or HTML. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing complex academic software.

The BIBTEX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BIBTEX converter.
