The .NL file extension is a somewhat ambiguous container often found in enterprise environments and niche creative workflows. Most frequently (approx. 48% of cases), this file is actually a PDF document generated by Oracle NetSuite scripts that failed to append the correct extension. In these cases, users are left with a file that their operating system cannot associate with Adobe Acrobat or web browsers, despite the internal data being a standard invoice or report.

Beyond enterprise reports, .NL files may function as Natron Layout files, storing node-based digital compositing projects in an XML structure. These files orchestrate visual effects pipelines but cannot be opened by standard image viewers. Less commonly, the extension is seen in gaming contexts as a NAND dump for the Nintendo iQue Player or as a mislabeled Matroska (.MKV) video container.
