About NCA files
The .NCA file extension stands for Nintendo Content Archive, the fundamental storage container used by the Nintendo Switch operating system (Horizon OS). These files act as encrypted wrappers for nearly all data on the console, including game ROMs, firmware updates, DLC, and system patches. The major downside for users is that .NCA files are heavily encrypted (typically using AES-XTS) and are not designed to be user-accessible. You cannot open them with standard archive tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR. Furthermore, a loose .NCA file is often just one fragment of a game; functional game dumps are usually packaged as NSP (Nintendo Submission Package) or XCI (Game Card Image) files, which contain multiple .NCA files inside. To use these files for emulation or asset analysis, you typically need to convert them into a mountable format or extract their contents. For emulation on platforms like Ryujinx, you generally need to repack loose .NCA files into an NSP. If your goal is to access game assets - such as converting internal audio to WAV or textures to PNG - you must use specialized command-line utilities like hactool combined with a valid prod.keys file to decrypt the archive.
