About NCA files
The .NCA (Nintendo Content Archive) is a proprietary file format used exclusively by the Nintendo Switch console. It stores game data, software updates, and system firmware. These files act as encrypted containers holding the actual executable code (.EXEFS) and read-only file systems (.ROMFS) of a game. Modders and developers typically use specialized command-line utilities like hactool to unpack them. Users often try to convert .NCA files to extract 3D models, audio tracks, or images for modding purposes. However, the format has severe disadvantages for everyday use. It is strictly proprietary, heavily encrypted using AES-XTS, and completely inaccessible without specific decryption keys dumped from a physical console. Furthermore, these files frequently exceed 10GB in size, making them difficult to share or process on standard computers. Because of these limits, you cannot directly convert an .NCA file into a standard media format like MP4 or JPG. The ideal target workflow is to extract the archive into .ROMFS or repackage it as an NSP (Nintendo Submission Package) or XCI file for use in emulators. Any raw assets extracted will then require further conversion. This is a closed, heavily encrypted format. Standard online converters fail to process it because they do not have access to your personal Nintendo Switch decryption keys.
