About NBU files
The .nbu file format is a proprietary data archive created by Nokia PC Suite (specifically the Nokia Content Copier utility). It stores comprehensive backups from vintage Nokia feature phones and Symbian smartphones, including address books, SMS and MMS messages, calendar events, notes, and raw media files. The main disadvantage of the .nbu format is its absolute obsolescence. The file is a monolithic binary blob that cannot be opened natively by modern operating systems like Windows 11, macOS, or any current mobile platform (Android or iOS). Installing legacy Nokia software is often impossible on 64-bit systems, and even when successful, the software frequently fails to parse its own older archives. Users are locked out of their historical data unless the archive is unpacked. To recover your data, you must extract or convert the contents of the .nbu file. For migrating contacts to Android or iOS, convert to VCF (vCard) files. For archiving and reading old text messages, convert them to CSV or XML formats. For photos and ringtones, the archive must be decompressed to extract the native JPG or MP3 files.
