About MXM files
The .MXM extension refers to two distinct file types that users often find difficult to manage due to their proprietary nature.
1. Maxwell Material File (Most Common)
This file contains surface definitions (reflectivity, transparency, roughness) for Next Limit Maxwell Render.
- The Problem: Users often mistake .MXM files for standard image textures (like JPG or PNG). However, the file is actually a "recipe" of mathematical parameters describing how light interacts with a surface, not a raster image itself. It cannot be opened in Adobe Photoshop or standard photo viewers.
- The Solution: To "convert" this to an image, you must render the material using the Maxwell Material Editor or Maxwell Studio. You can then save the preview as a JPG, PNG, or TIFF.
2. MixMeister Track Information
These are metadata sidecar files generated by MixMeister DJ software.
- The Problem: These files act as a map for an audio track, containing calculated BPM, key detection, and beat grids. They do not contain the actual audio data. Users frequently try to convert .MXM to MP3, which is impossible because the file is only a few kilobytes of text/data, not sound.
- The Solution: You must locate the original audio file (e.g., WAV or MP3) that the .MXM belongs to. The .MXM is useful only within the MixMeister environment to recall track settings.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MXM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MD, ZIP, TXT, MTT, MXS and MAX files.
The MXM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MXM converter.
