About MTT files

The .MTT extension is a classic example of a filename collision, utilized by distinct software ecosystems that do not interact. The most frequent variant (approx. 22%) is the Lumion Material Set, generated by Lumion, a popular 3D architectural visualization tool. These files store complex material definitions - including textures, reflection maps, and weathering settings - allowing designers to transfer aesthetic properties between projects. The primary problem here is proprietary lock-in; a Lumion .MTT file is useless outside the Lumion environment. You cannot open it directly in Blender or 3ds Max, nor can you simply "convert" it to a standard image like JPG or PNG without first loading it into Lumion and rendering the output.

A significant secondary usage (18%) involves Lernwerkstatt, an educational software suite by Medienwerkstatt Mühlacker. Here, .MTT files function as templates for interactive worksheets or quizzes. Teachers frequently struggle with these files when moving to modern platforms, as they require the specific legacy software to view. For archiving or distribution to students without the software, the only viable workflow is opening the template in Lernwerkstatt and printing the output to PDF.

Less common variants include the IBM Transformation Extender Type Tree (used for mapping data schemas), Fluke Biomedical test templates, and Maxwell Render material libraries. Because these formats are binary-incompatible, simply changing the extension will break the file. The best approach is to identify the source software: if it's for 3D visualization, aim for rendered outputs (JPG, TIFF); if it's educational, convert to PDF for accessibility; if it's data-related (IBM/Fluke), exporting to structured text formats like XML or JSON is the ideal archiving strategy.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MTT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JPG, MXM, IMS and PLO files.

The MTT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MTT converter.
