About MXS files

The .MXS extension covers two very different, mutually exclusive formats that cause confusion for users.

1. Maxwell Render Scene File (Professional 3D):
Most commonly, this is a proprietary scene format used by Maxwell Render (developed by Next Limit). These files contain high-fidelity 3D geometry, lighting data, and material definitions intended for physically accurate rendering. Users often generate these by exporting from 3ds Max, Maya, or SketchUp using a Maxwell plugin.

2. Set-Top Box DVR Recording (Consumer Video):
A significant portion of .MXS files are raw video recordings generated by digital set-top boxes (STBs) using generic chipsets (often ALI Corp).

Convert.Guru analyzes your MXS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted W3D, MXM, 3DS and MAX files.

The MXS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MXS converter.
