The .MX file extension is a notorious source of confusion because it is shared by three completely different ecosystems: scientific computing, legacy graphic design, and embedded systems. Most commonly (approx. 26%), it is a Wolfram Language Serialized Package file created by Wolfram Mathematica. These are binary dumps of Wolfram expressions saved for high-speed loading. The major problem here is proprietary lock-in: these files are often platform-dependent (e.g., a file saved on a 64-bit Windows system may fail to open on a 32-bit Linux architecture) and are unreadable without an expensive Mathematica license.
Alternatively, your file might be a legacy vector graphic from Macromedia FreeHand MX (a predecessor to Adobe Illustrator). Since Adobe discontinued FreeHand in 2007, opening these files is increasingly difficult on modern OS versions, leaving designers unable to access their old work. Less frequently, .MX refers to a diagram file from diagrams.net (formerly draw.io) or a Motorola S-Record used in firmware updates for set-top boxes.
For Wolfram data, the goal is usually extraction: converting the binary dump to structured text formats like JSON or CSV for use in Python or Excel. For FreeHand or diagrams.net files, the best targets are PDF for viewing or SVG for continued editing in web-based vector tools.
