The .mx file extension is heavily fragmented across several completely unrelated industries. Most commonly, it acts as a Wolfram Language binary dump generated by Wolfram Mathematica. It is also frequently used for flowchart and diagram files by draw.io, Motorola S-record firmware updates for embedded systems, Mendix application models, or legacy vector graphics from the discontinued Macromedia FreeHand MX.
The biggest disadvantage of the .mx format is this identity crisis. If it is a Mathematica binary dump, it is a closed, highly proprietary format that locks your data behind a very expensive subscription to open. If it is a legacy FreeHand file, the software has been discontinued for over a decade, making the files nearly impossible to open on modern operating systems.
