About MUN files

MUN files are specialized Windows System Resource containers introduced in Windows 10 (version 1903) and found in the C:\Windows\SystemResources directory. Unlike standard documents, these are PE (Portable Executable) binaries that Microsoft uses to store interface assets - such as icons, bitmaps, and string tables - separately from the executable code (like DLL or EXE files).

The Problem: Because they are system-critical binaries locked by TrustedInstaller, you cannot simply double-click to view them, nor can you open them in standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop. This separation (putting logic in the DLL and assets in the MUN) optimizes Windows updates, but it creates friction for modders and developers trying to customize system icons or extract localization text.

The Solution: To use these assets, you must "convert" the file by extracting its internal resources. For UI design, extract icon groups to ICO or PNG. For translation or analysis, export string tables to TXT or RC (Resource Script). Tools like Resource Hacker or 7-Zip are required to parse the internal structure.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MUN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MUM, EX, VXD and DEL files.

The MUN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MUN converter.
