About OGM files
The .OGM (Ogg Media) format is a legacy container format, originally created as a modification of the Ogg container to support non-native video codecs like DivX or XviD alongside AC3 audio. While innovative in the early 2000s for enabling features like multiple audio tracks, chapters, and subtitles before MKV became standard, it is now largely obsolete. Users typically convert these files because modern hardware - such as Smart TVs, gaming consoles (e.g., PlayStation), and mobile devices - often lacks native support for the specific OGM implementation. Furthermore, because OGM was effectively a 'hack' of the Ogg specification, even some strictly compliant Ogg players may reject these files.
For universal playback, the best practice is to convert .OGM to MP4 (H.264/AAC), which ensures compatibility with web browsers and mobile devices. For archiving without quality loss, converting to MKV (Matroska) is ideal as it can preserve the multiple audio streams and subtitle tracks inherent in the source file. A secondary, less common use of the .OGM extension is for Origin Matrix files created by OriginLab. These are proprietary data files containing numeric matrix sheets; users without the expensive Origin software suite often need to convert these to CSV or XLSX for use in Microsoft Excel.

The OGM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OGM converter.
