The .MNL extension is a battleground of three distinct legacy formats, often creating confusion for engineers and technical writers. The most frequent variant (approx. 44%) is an OrCAD PCB Layout netlist or database file. These files act as the bridge between schematic capture and physical board layout, containing critical connectivity data. The friction here is high: they are strictly proprietary to Cadence software, making them unreadable to standard text editors or competitor CAD tools without conversion. You are essentially locked into the OrCAD ecosystem just to view pin connections.
The second common type (approx. 21%) is a layout template for Help+Manual, used to define the visual style of technical documentation. While effective for generating consistent manuals, these binary templates prevent you from easily extracting style data or migrating your documentation to modern platforms like Markdown or HTML5 without the original software.
A third, niche use (under 1%) is the AutoCAD Menu LISP file. Unlike the others, this is a plain text file containing AutoLISP code that automatically loads alongside a menu file. While readable in Notepad, they are useless if you don't have the parent CAD application to execute the scripts.
