About BOT files

A .BOT file is most commonly a Gerber RS-274X manufacturing file representing the bottom copper layer of a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). These files contain ASCII coordinate data used by photoplotters to fabricate the conductive tracks on the underside of a circuit board. They are typically generated by Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software such as Altium Designer and Cadence OrCAD.

While critical for electronics manufacturing, .BOT files pose significant accessibility challenges. Because they are specialized vector instructions for machines, they cannot be opened by standard image viewers or web browsers. Reviewing a PCB layout usually requires installing expensive, resource-heavy ECAD suites or specialized Gerber viewers. Furthermore, the extension ".bot" is often a user-defined naming convention (short for "Bottom") rather than a strict standard, leading to confusion with internet bots or gaming files.
