The .ABC extension primarily refers to two distinct but widely used formats: the Alembic 3D interchange format and the ABC Musical Notation standard.
Alembic (.ABC) files are industry-standard containers used in visual effects and animation to store complex baked geometry and animations. While highly efficient for transferring scenes between heavy-duty software like Autodesk Maya and SideFX Houdini, they are notoriously large and difficult to edit directly. They serve as a "digital print" of a 3D scene, meaning the underlying rig and logic are often stripped away. Users frequently convert Alembic files to FBX, OBJ, or USD to make the assets editable in game engines like Unreal Engine or lighter 3D tools like Blender.
ABC Musical Notation files are lightweight text files that use ASCII characters to represent sheet music. While human-readable and excellent for archiving folk tunes, they require specific interpretation software to be heard or printed. Musicians often need to convert these text files to PDF for printing sheet music, MIDI for audio playback, or MusicXML for importing into major composition software like MuseScore.
