About ABC files
The .abc file extension is highly fragmented. Its most common legitimate use is as an Alembic 3D Geometry Cache (Wikipedia), an open-source interchange format developed by Sony Pictures Imageworks and Industrial Light & Magic. It stores baked 3D geometry and animation data to move scenes between tools like Autodesk Maya and Blender. The main disadvantage of Alembic files is their massive file size, often exceeding gigabytes for complex 3D scenes, making them difficult to share or use on the web. Another major use is ABC Music Notation (Wikipedia), a plain-text format for rendering sheet music and creating audio files. While lightweight, plain text music requires specialized software to play or print.
