A .ma0 file stores the automap exploration data for a single character in the classic action RPG Diablo II. It dictates which areas of the game world the player has already revealed on the map during the "Normal" difficulty setting. When paired with the main character save file, it ensures continuity in gameplay exploration.
The major disadvantage of the .ma0 format is that it is a proprietary, closed binary file. It cannot be opened by standard text editors or image viewers. You cannot naturally view this map data outside of the game engine without specialized third-party tools like Hero Editor. If the file becomes corrupted, the game will fail to load the map progress, meaning the player loses their minimap history for that character.
Users often attempt to convert or extract .ma0 files to analyze map seeds, map layouts, or back up specific map generation states.
