About MA0 files
The .ma0 file is a game data file specific to Diablo II (both the legacy 2000 version and Diablo II: Resurrected). It stores the map layout, fog-of-war status, and discovered areas for a specific character on the Normal Difficulty setting.
Users typically encounter this file when backing up save games (.d2s files) or attempting to "maphack" (reveal) the game world without playing through it. The practical constraint is that .ma0 files are proprietary binary blobs; you cannot double-click to view the map in an image viewer, nor can you edit them with a text editor. If this file becomes corrupted, the character may crash upon loading.
For most users, "converting" a .ma0 file actually means one of two things:
Viewing: Using a third-party tool like Hero Editor or an online map reader to render the binary data into a visible PNG or JPG image of the level layout (essential for speedrunners looking for optimal paths).
Resetting: Deleting the file forces the game to "convert" the character's state by generating a fresh, randomized map upon the next login (useful for "rerolling" maps to get better farming locations).
Convert.Guru analyzes your MA0 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MA0 file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Diablo II or similar software from the "Diablo II Map Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to MA0, try Diablo II or another comparable tool in the "Diablo II Map Data" category.
The MA0 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MA0 converter.
