About IRF files
The .IRF file is predominantly a proprietary video container used by closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems and digital video recorders (DVRs) manufactured by companies like iCatch Inc. and iVIEW Technology. Less frequently, it functions as an Impulse Response Function file in Stata for statistical data, or an iFLYTEK speech resource file. The primary problem with .IRF surveillance files is severe compatibility restriction. These files wrap standard H.264 video streams inside a proprietary, undocumented container. Because of this, standard media players like VLC media player or Windows Media Player will fail to open them. Users are typically forced to use legacy, manufacturer-provided software like iCatchPlayer, which is often Windows-only, clunky, and lacks modern export features. If law enforcement or legal teams need the footage, sending them a raw .IRF file usually creates a technical roadblock. To make the video playable on any device or browser, you must convert it. For general playback and sharing, convert .IRF to MP4. If you are archiving the footage or need lossless repackaging of the H.264 stream, convert to MKV or AVI.
