About LMP files
The .lmp file extension primarily represents a Lump File or Demo Recording used by retro and modern game engines, most notably id Software's Doom and Quake, as well as derivatives like Sonic Robo Blast 2 and Garry's Mod. In these engines, a "lump" is an internal chunk of data (such as textures, sounds, or map layouts) extracted from a master WAD or PAK archive. As a demo file, an .lmp records a player's keystrokes and game state changes. Occasionally, this extension is also used as an XML-based photo editing preset for Skylum Luminar.
The main disadvantage of game-based .lmp demo files is that they are not actually video files. They contain zero visual or audio data. Because of this, standard media players like VLC cannot open them. To watch a Doom demo, you are forced to play it back using the exact game engine version that recorded it. This makes sharing gameplay footage highly restrictive and frustrating, as the recipient must have the game installed and configured correctly to prevent playback desynchronization.
To make an .lmp demo watchable for a general audience, the best solution is to run the demo in a source port (like PrBoom+ or ZDoom) and capture the screen to create a standard MP4 or WebM video file for web sharing, or a high-bitrate MKV for archiving. We can analyze the binary or text headers to help you extract readable TXT or XML data without installing dedicated game tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LMP file to EDD, PNG, MP4, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4 or BSP, you can use Doom Engine or similar software from the "Game Data and Demo Recording" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to LMP, try Doom Engine or another comparable tool in the "Game Data and Demo Recording" category.
The LMP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LMP converter.
