About LMP files
The .lmp extension primarily refers to data files associated with the id Tech family of game engines, famously used in Doom, Quake, and derivatives like Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart. These files typically serve one of two purposes: Gameplay Demos or Game Data Lumps.
Gameplay Demos: These are small files that record player input (keystrokes and mouse movements) rather than video. Because they depend on the original game engine to "replay" the events in real-time, they cannot be opened by standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player. To share these recordings on platforms like YouTube, users must convert them by playing the file in a source port (like PrBoom+) and capturing the screen, or using engine features to export to MP4 or AVI.
Game Data Lumps: In modding contexts (using tools like SLADE), individual assets extracted from a WAD or PAK archive - such as raw graphics, color palettes, or compiled scripts - are often saved as .lmp files. These are proprietary binary blobs that are unreadable without context. Modders often convert these graphical lumps to standard PNG or BMP images for editing, or convert compiled scripts to TXT for analysis.
A less common use case is a preset file for Skylum Luminar, containing photo editing adjustments.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The LMP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LMP converter.
