The .LFS file extension most frequently represents a Large File Send placeholder generated by Mimecast. These files are small XML documents sent via email when the intended attachment exceeds the mail server's size limits (often 20MB+). Instead of the actual video, presentation, or archive, the recipient receives this lightweight stub containing metadata and a secure download link.
The primary frustration users encounter is receiving a .LFS file expecting media or documents, only to find their operating system cannot open it. Because it is merely a text-based pointer, double-clicking often triggers an error or opens a code editor rather than the expected content.
