About LATEX files

A .LATEX file is a plain text source document written in the markup language of the LaTeX typesetting system. It contains both the text of the document and specific structural commands that dictate formatting, equations, bibliographies, and layout. Academic institutions, publishers, and scientific researchers rely on this format to handle complex mathematical formulas and maintain consistent typography.

To view the actual formatted document, users must process the .LATEX file through a TeX compiler like MiKTeX or TeX Live, or use an online editor like Overleaf. This is the primary disadvantage of the format: it is completely unreadable as a finished document in its raw state. Collaborating with users who do not know LaTeX syntax is extremely difficult. The files are also prone to compilation errors if referenced style files (STY), document classes (CLS), or image assets are missing from the local environment.

To share a finished document, you must convert it. For archiving, printing, or sharing the final layout exactly as intended, convert to PDF. For collaborative text editing with users who do not code, convert to Microsoft Word's DOCX. For web publication, convert to HTML. Drag and drop your .LATEX file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
