About KGB files
The .KGB file extension represents a high-compression archive created by KGB Archiver, a discontinued utility from the mid-2000s developed by Tomasz Pawlak. These files were notorious during the 'compression wars' for their ability to compress gigabytes of data into mere megabytes (e.g., squeezing a 700MB CD image down to 10MB) using the powerful PAQ6 or PAQ7 algorithms.
However, this extreme compression comes with significant friction points: opening a .KGB file requires massive amounts of RAM and CPU power, often taking hours or even days to decompress a single file. Furthermore, the format is not natively supported by modern operating systems or standard tools like Windows Explorer or standard macOS utilities, and even popular tools like 7-Zip often fail to open them without specific plugins. Because the original software is no longer updated, users should convert these files for practical use. The best workflow is to extract the contents using a compatible legacy tool and immediately repackage them into a modern, efficient format like 7Z (for high compression) or ZIP (for maximum compatibility) to ensure future access and faster opening speeds.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KGB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KGB file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use KGB Archiver or similar software from the "High Compression Archiving" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to KGB, try KGB Archiver or another comparable tool in the "High Compression Archiving" category.
The KGB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KGB converter.
