About UQM files
A .UQM file is a game data package archive specifically used by The Ur-Quan Masters, the popular open-source port of the classic sci-fi game Star Control II. These files store essential game assets, including audio tracks, dialogue text, graphics, and 3D models required by the game engine during gameplay.
The main disadvantage of the .UQM format is its rigid association with a single application. To the operating system, it appears as an unknown, proprietary file. It cannot be natively opened by web browsers or default media players. Furthermore, these archives can easily exceed hundreds of megabytes in size, making them cumbersome to handle if you only want to extract a specific music track or image. Standard online converters often fail to process them because they do not recognize the custom extension.
Converting a .UQM file directly into another single media format is impossible. Instead, you must convert or extract it into target archive formats like ZIP, 7Z, or RAR. Because a .UQM file is essentially just a renamed ZIP archive under the hood, extracting it allows you to access standard embedded media files, such as OGG for audio or PNG for textures.
This format is difficult to open natively because only the original game engine expects to load it as a priority-based asset package. Even though it acts like a closed format, if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format (like a standard ZIP directory), viewing the file structure or conversion of the internal assets may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your UQM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The UQM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UQM converter.
