About ENC files
The .ENC file extension acts as a generic container for various types of Encrypted or Encoded data, creating significant confusion for users attempting to open them. The most common technical use is as a raw encoded file generated by security tools like OpenSSL or found in backups from services like WhatsApp and Samsung Smart Switch. These files are strictly protected; without the correct decryption key or the original account credentials, they are effectively inaccessible black boxes. A frequent frustration arises with Google Photos or archive downloads, where standard images are sometimes appended with .enc or wrapped in encryption, preventing standard viewers from displaying them.
However, in the creative sector, .ENC refers to music notation scores created by Passport Encore. These files contain complex musical arrangements, lyrics, and MIDI data. The primary disadvantage here is proprietary lock-in; as Encore software becomes less common, musicians struggle to access their old compositions. To preserve these scores or share them with performers who do not own the software, it is essential to convert them to universal formats. For viewing and printing, converting to PDF is the standard. For editing in modern DAWs or notation software (like Finale or Sibelius), converting to MIDI or XML (MusicXML) preserves the note data. Additionally, NOAA uses this extension for Electronic Navigation Charts, which are vector files requiring specialized GIS conversion for use in standard mapping applications.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ENC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ENC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ENC converter.
