About IR files
The .ir file extension has several distinct uses, but it is most commonly an Infrared Remote Signal file. These files are extensively used by multi-tool hardware like the Flipper Zero and open-source Linux software like LIRC. They store raw pulse timings or decoded signals required to emulate remote controls for televisions, air conditioners, and other consumer electronics. Alternately, the .ir extension is frequently used as a disguised RAR or ZIP compressed archive file, intentionally renamed to bypass strict email attachment filters.
Less common uses include Audio Impulse Response files used by convolution reverb plugins in audio workstations like Audacity, intermediate print representations in older Corel WordPerfect setups, and French EDI tax declarations.
The main disadvantage of .ir files is format fragmentation. An infrared file formatted for a Flipper Zero will not work natively in Android IR blaster applications or LIRC configurations without manual text parsing and format conversion. Conversely, if the file is an archive, users are left guessing the original compression method.
Target conversions depend heavily on the internal data. Infrared code databases are typically converted to plain TXT or .LIRC configuration files. Disguised archives should simply be renamed back to RAR or ZIP for extraction.
Because this extension hosts multiple conflicting formats, it is notoriously difficult to open or convert automatically. Often, only the original hardware or specialized software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like a renamed ZIP archive or readable text - viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IR file to WAV, JPG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR or PSD, you can use Flipper Zero or similar software from the "Infrared Remote Signal Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to IR, try Flipper Zero or another comparable tool in the "Infrared Remote Signal Data" category.
The IR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IR converter.
