About IPK files
The .IPK file is primarily an embedded Linux software package managed by the opkg or ipkg package manager. It is heavily used to distribute applications for OpenWrt routers, set-top boxes, and LG Electronics webOS smart TVs. Alternatively, Ubisoft uses the .IPK extension for proprietary game data archive bundles in the UbiArt Framework (used in games like Just Dance). To open standard Linux .IPK files, you can use archiving utilities like 7-Zip, as they are essentially .TAR.GZ or DEB-like archives containing control scripts and data. Game-related .IPK files require specialized community-built unpackers. Working with .IPK files on a desktop computer is frustrating. Because they are designed for embedded hardware (like routers and smart TVs), you cannot install or execute them natively on Windows or macOS. Furthermore, game-specific .IPK files are often encrypted or use proprietary compression, making it impossible to browse the internal textures or audio files without complex, untrusted modding tools. For general extraction and inspection, convert your .IPK file to ZIP or .TAR.GZ. This allows you to easily browse the inner filesystem structure or game assets on any standard desktop OS.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IPK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IPK file to APK, DEB, ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB or ACE, you can use opkg or similar software from the "Embedded Linux Software Package" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to IPK, try opkg or another comparable tool in the "Embedded Linux Software Package" category.
The IPK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IPK converter.
