About IMI files
The .imi file extension is primarily associated with IncrediMail, a now-defunct email client famous for its colorful, animated multimedia messages. These files typically contain animated email content, stickers, or e-cards used to decorate messages. Since IncrediMail servers were permanently shut down in 2020, users are often left with these proprietary files locked on old hard drives, unable to view their nostalgic emails or attachments in modern clients like Outlook or Thunderbird.
A secondary but significant use (approx. 22%) is as an Image Measurement Project file created by Imagicad or processed via ImageMagick. These files store markup data, layers, and measurement annotations overlaid on raster images. Finally, .imi files may also be Magellan Map Files used by older Magellan GPS devices to store vector map data.
For IncrediMail recovery, the best conversion target is GIF (to preserve animation) or JPG (for static archiving). For Imagicad projects, converting to standard PDF or TIFF ensures the measurements remain visible without requiring the original specialized software.

The IMI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMI converter.
