About IMF files
The .imf extension is a fragmented format designation used by several unrelated applications, most notably the legacy IncrediMail email client and the modern Goodnotes digital note-taking app.
For IncrediMail users, an IMF file typically represents an 'IncrediMail Media File' or e-card. The primary challenge here is software obsolescence; IncrediMail servers shut down in 2020, making these proprietary files difficult to view without a working legacy installation. They function as containers for graphics and animations used in emails, but they are not standard image files. To preserve these memories or attachments, users should convert them to standard JPG, PNG, or PDF formats, which removes the dependency on defunct software.
For Goodnotes users, the IMF file (often found inside Goodnotes backup folders or internal directories) contains raw ink data and page metadata. These are proprietary binary files optimized for the iPad's Apple Pencil input, not for human readability or external editing. Practical constraints include the inability to open these files in standard text editors or vector software like Adobe Illustrator. If you need to share your notes or archive them for long-term access, the best workflow is not to edit the .imf file directly, but to export the document from within the Goodnotes app to PDF.
A third common variant exists in PC gaming (specifically titles by Illusion Soft), where .imf files are actually standard PNG images with a renamed extension to obfuscate assets. In this specific case, no complex conversion is needed - simply renaming the file extension from .imf to png often restores full compatibility with image viewers.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IMF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted IFM, HEIC, JPG, MP3, PNG, ZIP, TABLE, CMI and TEST files.
The IMF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMF converter.
