About IMD files

The .imd file extension is a "chameleon" format used by three completely different industries, creating significant confusion for users trying to open one.

1. GeoMedia Map Data (GIS): The most common variation (approx. 30%) is generated by Hexagon GeoMedia. These files store geospatial vector data and map metadata. The Problem: They are deeply proprietary and often cannot be opened by open-source tools like QGIS or Google Earth without conversion. Users looking to share map data need to convert these to Shapefile (.SHP), GeoJSON, or KML.

2. ImageDisk Archive (Emulation): In the retro-computing world, .imd refers to a compressed disk image created by Dave Dunfield’s ImageDisk utility. The Problem: Unlike a standard ISO or IMG file, an IMD file contains metadata about the disk tracks and sectors (like interleave and skew) alongside compressed data. Most modern operating systems and standard emulators (like DOSBox) cannot mount these directly. To use these files for virtualization or archiving, you must convert them to raw binary formats like BIN, IMG, or ISO.

3. CaseWare IDEA Database: Financial auditors use CaseWare IDEA to analyze fraud and risk. The IMD file here acts as a database container. The Problem: This data is often siloed within the auditing software. To include these findings in standard reports or analyze them in broader tools, users frequently need to convert the data to Excel (.XLSX), CSV, or PDF.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IMD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IM0, IMG, HEIC, JPG, DNG, JPEG, PDF, ZIP, WEBP, RAR, P7S, MP3 and TXT files.

The IMD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMD converter.
