About IMD files
The .IMD file extension is highly fragmented and represents several completely distinct data structures. Most commonly, .IMD files are proprietary GIS map data files used by Intergraph GeoMedia, legacy floppy disk images created by Dave Dunfield's ImageDisk utility, or audit databases generated by CaseWare IDEA. The primary disadvantage of the .IMD format is this extreme ambiguity. Users constantly encounter unsupported format errors because the operating system cannot determine which application owns the file. Furthermore, GeoMedia and CaseWare are expensive, closed-ecosystem enterprise tools, while ImageDisk files represent obsolete physical media that modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS refuse to mount natively. To achieve compatibility, GIS map data should be converted to .SHP or .GeoJSON. Legacy disk images must typically be extracted or converted to standard .IMG or .ISO formats to function in modern virtual machines. Because .IMD is a closed, proprietary format with multiple conflicting definitions, standard online converters almost always fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the complex database structures. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IMD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IMD file to IMG, PDF, ISO, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW or VBOX, you can use Intergraph GeoMedia or similar software from the "GIS Mapping & Disk Imaging" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to IMD, try Intergraph GeoMedia or another comparable tool in the "GIS Mapping & Disk Imaging" category.
The IMD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMD converter.
