An .IDLK file is a temporary lock file generated by Adobe InDesign whenever a user opens an INDD document. Its primary use case is to prevent concurrent editing by multiple users on a shared network drive. The file records the computer name and the active user, locking the main document to prevent conflicting versions and data loss.
Users often attempt to convert .IDLK files because they mistake them for the actual project files, especially after a system crash leaves the lock file orphaned. The core disadvantage of this format is its potential for confusion; it is a tiny, hidden system file that contains absolutely zero layout data, images, or text.
