The .HR2 file is a 3D asset file used by Poser, a 3D rendering and animation software currently managed by Bondware. It specifically stores hair prop data, including geometry placement, morph targets, and material settings for 3D character models.
Native support for this format is largely restricted to the Poser ecosystem, though users frequently migrate these assets into DAZ Studio or Blender using specific import scripts.
The major disadvantage of .HR2 files is their strict dependency on the local Poser "Runtime" directory structure. Most .HR2 files do not actually contain the raw 3D mesh data. Instead, they act as metadata pointers referencing external OBJ geometry files and texture maps. If you move the .HR2 file without its associated dependencies, the hair will fail to load. This makes the format difficult to share and requires paid, specialized software to open. Standard online converters fail to process these files because they cannot parse the proprietary internal node trees or resolve the missing external files on your local hard drive.
To use 3D hair assets in modern game engines or standard 3D suites, you should convert the geometry to universal formats like FBX, OBJ, or DAE (Collada). Be aware that proprietary material setups, dynamic physics properties, and specific morph targets are usually lost during this conversion.
Because .HR2 is a highly specialized asset format tied to local directories, it is notoriously difficult to open or convert without the original application.
