About PZ3 files

A .pz3 file is a 3D scene created by Poser, a character animation tool currently owned by Bondware. These files store the spatial arrangement of 3D characters, props, lighting configurations, and camera angles, often referencing external geometry and texture assets located in a "Runtime" library.

While .pz3 is the native language of Poser, it can lead to major headaches for users working in modern production pipelines. The format is notoriously proprietary and often relies on absolute file paths, meaning if you move a .pz3 file without its accompanying "Runtime" folder structure, you will likely open a scene full of grey, untextured models or missing geometry errors. Furthermore, industry-standard tools like Blender and Autodesk Maya do not natively support .pz3 import without complex third-party plugins or scripts.

To make these assets usable in game engines or other 3D software, conversion is essential. For static rendering or sculpting, converting to OBJ (Wavefront) is the most reliable method for preserving mesh geometry. For retaining skeletal rigging and animation data for use in Unity or Unreal Engine, the FBX format is the preferred target. For long-term archiving that bundles textures with geometry, converting to .COLLADA (.dae) or ZIP archives of the scene dependencies is recommended.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PZ3 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HR2, PZZ, PPZ and PZ2 files.

The PZ3 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PZ3 converter.
