The .HML file is fundamentally an XML-based or HTML-based word processing document format generated by Hancom Hangul Word Processor. It is the standard document format for South Korean government, enterprise, and academic institutions. To natively open .HML files, users require Hancom Office. Alternative software like Microsoft Word often requires specialized plugins or fails to render the complex Korean typography correctly.
The primary disadvantage of the .HML format is its regional exclusivity. If you send an .HML file to users outside South Korea, they will likely be unable to open it. It is proprietary, lacks native support in standard web browsers, and poses major interoperability barriers in international workflows.
Converting .HML to PDF ensures exact visual layout retention across all devices. Converting to DOCX allows editing in standard global office suites, though some specific Korean formatting rules may be altered during translation. For basic raw text extraction, converting to TXT is ideal.
Because .HML utilizes proprietary Hancom structures alongside standard XML, it is notoriously difficult for generic online converters to process without breaking the layout.
