About GTM files

The .GTM file extension most commonly refers to the native binary data format used by GPS TrackMaker, a widely used tool for managing geospatial data from devices like Garmin and Magellan. These files store a comprehensive log of waypoints, track logs, and routes. While efficient for the software, the .GTM format is a proprietary 'walled garden.' It is not natively supported by modern web platforms like Strava, Google Maps, or generic GIS viewers, making it difficult to share hiking trails or survey data without the original software installed.

To make this data usable, users typically need to convert .GTM to GPX (the universal standard for GPS exchange) or KML for visualization in Google Earth. A less common but critical use of the extension is in engineering, where it represents system simulation models for GT-SUITE or legacy mesh files for Gambit (precursor to modern ANSYS tools). These engineering files are strictly version-locked and often require expensive enterprise licenses just to view basic geometry.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GTM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HTM, ZIP, PBIX, PDF, SCORE, PHC, KSS and GPX files.

The GTM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GTM converter.
