About KSS files
The .KSS file extension is primarily associated with the KISS (Keep It Simple, Steel) Standard. It is a data exchange format heavily utilized in the structural steel fabrication industry. Software like Tekla Structures and SDS/2 export these files to transmit Bill of Materials (BOM), part lists, routing, and assembly data to MIS (Management Information Systems) or ERP software for manufacturing. A much smaller percentage of .KSS files are Konami Sound System files, which store synthesized audio ripped from retro MSX home computer games, or obscure KSS-Paint images.
The primary disadvantage of the .KSS fabrication file is its limitation as a basic, plain-text or highly structured data list. It does not contain 3D geometric models or detailed drawing data, only raw material and part numbers. It is highly proprietary to steel manufacturing workflows, making it useless to general users. You need expensive, specialized software like Tekla PowerFab to properly parse the assembly hierarchy and estimate costs.
Users often need to convert .KSS fabrication data into CSV or XML to import the material lists into Excel or generic database software. For CNC machinery operations, related data is usually exported to NC1 (DSTV) files. If you possess a Konami Sound file, your goal is to convert it to standard audio formats like WAV or MP3 for playback on modern devices.
Standard online converters routinely fail to process .KSS files because they lack the specific parsing logic for either niche steel industry standards or obscure 1980s Japanese sound chips. Even if the file is a closed proprietary format, our analyzer can inspect the file and extract embedded text, helping you salvage critical part lists or identify the correct software to open it.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KSS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KSS file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use Tekla Structures or similar software from the "Steel Fabrication Data Exchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to KSS, try Tekla Structures or another comparable tool in the "Steel Fabrication Data Exchange" category.
The KSS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KSS converter.
