About GRID files

The .grid file extension is highly fragmented and used by several completely different software applications. Most commonly, it stores a crochet or cross-stitch pattern created in Stitch Fiddle or StitchBuddy. In scientific contexts, it acts as an ASCII raster grid data file for GIS software like Esri ArcGIS or Surfer, or a geological grid model for GEOVIA Surpac. It can also be an XML-based custom control panel for Ross Video DashBoard, a digital logic circuit schematic for Digital Works, or an old spreadsheet file. This fragmentation is a major disadvantage. A .grid file lacks a standardized signature, meaning operating systems often do not know which application to launch. Furthermore, these files are strictly proprietary to their specific domains. For example, a GIS .grid file contains raw spatial data that is unreadable without expensive mapping software. A Stitch Fiddle pattern is locked to that platform unless exported. Users often need to convert .grid files to more accessible formats. For patterns, converting to PDF or JPG allows easy printing and sharing. For GIS raster data, converting to CSV, XYZ, or TIF is essential for interoperability with other data tools. Because .grid represents multiple closed formats, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format like XML or ASCII text, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GRID file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GRD, GPF, GRIB, TXT, PNG, BAK, INP, HED, MPH, TREE and JSON files.

The GRID Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GRID converter.
