About HED files

The .HED file extension is highly fragmented and used by entirely different applications. Historically, it was used as a document format for the legacy G&S Hyper-Text-Editor. Today, it is much more commonly encountered as a proprietary header file accompanying a larger data or database file. For instance, ChamSys MagicQ and Avolites use .HED files to store lighting fixture personality profiles. Other niche uses include game engine headers for CD Projekt RED's REDengine, market research data headers for Nielsen, and XML-based metadata for CourtSmart digital recordings. The main disadvantage of .HED files is this extreme fragmentation. Without knowing the exact origin software, the file is virtually useless. Furthermore, if it is a header file, it relies on a secondary data file (like a DAT or BIN file) to function; opening the header alone will not reveal the main data payload. These files are not natively supported by web browsers or standard operating systems, making them frustrating to share or archive.
