About GPI files

The .GPI file extension is most commonly associated with Garmin Point of Interest (POI) files. These are binary data files used by Garmin GPS navigation devices to store collections of custom locations, such as speed cameras, restaurants, hotels, or scenic viewpoints. They are typically compiled from source CSV or GPX files using the Garmin POI Loader tool. Less commonly, .GPI files act as Gerber Photoplotter Information files created by PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design software like Autodesk EAGLE. The main disadvantage of a Garmin .GPI file is that it is a compiled, proprietary binary format. You cannot open it in a standard text editor or generic spreadsheet software. It locks your location data into the Garmin hardware ecosystem. Extracting this data for use on modern smartphones, web maps, or competing GPS devices requires specialized extraction tools. To regain control of your location data, you must convert the file. For universal GPS editing and mapping, convert to GPX (GPS Exchange Format). If you want to review the raw coordinate data in a spreadsheet like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, convert to CSV. For importing your custom points of interest into Google Earth, convert to KML. Convert.Guru analyzes your GPI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted POI, GPX, JPG, ZIP, CSV, CMP, PDF, TXT, POD, SGN, KML, PNG and PKPASS files.

The GPI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPI converter.
