Convert a file to GPI
To convert other file formats to the "GPS Waypoint Container" file type, you need software like Garmin BaseCamp or a similar tool.
About GPI files
A .gpi file primarily represents a Garmin Point of Interest file, a proprietary binary format used to store waypoints, speed alerts, and custom location data on Garmin GPS devices. Unlike the open GPX standard, GPI files are compiled for device efficiency, making them inaccessible to standard text editors, web browsers, and third-party mapping tools like Google Earth. This "black box" nature can be a major source of frustration when users attempt to audit their waypoint data, migrate to a non-Garmin device, or edit coordinates in a spreadsheet. To regain control over your navigation data, the best practice is converting GPI files to GPX for universal GPS compatibility, KML for visualization on Google Maps, or CSV for bulk editing in Microsoft Excel.
In the realm of engineering, a .gpi file may alternatively function as a Gerber Photoplotter Information file. Generated by PCB design software like Autodesk EAGLE or Ucamco tools, these text-based files contain metadata (aperture definitions, coordinate stats) for manufacturing printed circuit boards. While vital for fabrication machines, they are not designed for human readability. Engineers often convert these technical logs to PDF for documentation or archiving, ensuring the manufacturing specs are preserved in a universally viewable format.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GPI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GPI file to GPX, CSV, KML, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF or DAT, you can use Garmin BaseCamp or similar software from the "GPS Navigation Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to GPI, try Garmin BaseCamp or another comparable tool in the "GPS Navigation Data" category.
The GPI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPI converter.
