About GMP files
A .GMP file primarily functions as a map package. It is heavily utilized by GPS navigation systems like Garmin to store pre-compiled map tiles, and by GIS software such as Global Mapper to archive geospatial raster and vector data. Additionally, the .GMP extension is used by game engines, notably Unreal Engine, to store compiled level geometry and map layouts.
Working with .GMP files presents strict disadvantages. They are almost exclusively proprietary. A Garmin Map Package is unreadable outside of older desktop management software like Garmin MapSource. Global Mapper packages can exceed gigabytes in size and require expensive software licenses to open. Game maps are entirely locked to the specific engine version that compiled them. Furthermore, web-based platforms like GMapGIS output .GMP files as raw XML or JSON data wrappers, causing immense confusion regarding the true nature of the file's contents.
Converting these files is essential to bypass software locks. For universal geographic sharing, convert GIS .GMP files to GPX, KML, or GeoJSON. To preserve a visual snapshot of the map for archiving or printing, render it to PDF, PNG, or WebP. Extracting geometry from game maps often requires conversion to OBJ or FBX.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GMP file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use Garmin MapSource or similar software from the "Geographic Map Package" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to GMP, try Garmin MapSource or another comparable tool in the "Geographic Map Package" category.
The GMP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GMP converter.
