About GMP files
The .GMP extension is a notorious source of confusion because it is shared by several completely unrelated software ecosystems, most notably in the geospatial and gaming sectors. The most common modern usage is for a Garmin Map Package or a Global Mapper Package.
- Garmin Map Package: These files bundle map data, imagery, and overlays for use with Garmin GPS devices and software like BaseCamp. The key problem here is interoperability; a .GMP file is optimized for specific hardware or proprietary desktop software. You generally cannot upload it directly to web-based tools like Google Maps, Strava, or Google Earth without first extracting the data.
- Global Mapper Package: Generated by Global Mapper, these are compressed archives containing vector, raster, and elevation data. While efficient for transfer between users of the same software, they are a "black box" to users of QGIS or ArcGIS.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For General GPS Use: Convert to GPX (GPS Exchange Format). This is the universal standard supported by almost every GPS unit, fitness app, and mapping website.
- For Visualization: Convert to KML or KMZ to view your map data in 3D on Google Earth.
- For GIS Analysis: Convert to SHP (Shapefile) or DXF if you need to edit the vector geometry in CAD or professional GIS software.
- For Archiving: If the file is a raster map, converting to .GeoTIFF or PDF preserves the visual layout for printing.
Note: If your file fails to open in mapping software, it may be a compiled map file for the Unreal Engine or data from a GIGA Electronics OCR pen. These binary formats are typically not convertible to standard document or image types.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted PINNING , GMAP, XCF, BMP, PNG, JPG, GIC, DT2 and MPZ files.
The GMP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GMP converter.
