About GMAP files

The .GMAP file extension serves two completely different but equally frustrating purposes in the real world. First, it functions as a Garmin Map File used by Garmin BaseCamp and Garmin MapInstall to store heavy, offline topographic and street maps. On macOS, this format is technically a package (a hidden folder), while on Windows, it behaves as a visible directory containing hundreds of smaller data files like IMG and TDB. These files are notoriously bulky and proprietary, making them impossible to open without Garmin's native software. Second, .GMAP acts as a Google My Maps Shortcut created by the Google Drive desktop application. This version is simply a tiny text file containing a web link to your custom map on Google's servers. The major disadvantage here is that the file contains zero actual map data and is completely useless if you are offline or trying to share the file via email. To actually use your Google map data offline or in third-party GIS software, you must export it from the web interface as a KML or KMZ file. For Garmin packages, users typically need to compile the data into a single IMG file to run on a physical GPS device. Because these formats are heavily restricted - one being a massive proprietary directory and the other a simple web link - standard online converters fail to process them. If our analysis detects a Google shortcut, we can extract the internal JSON and URL links. If it is a Garmin file, we can inspect the embedded metadata to help you understand what map data is trapped inside.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GMAP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IMG, GMP, ZIP, KMZ, KML and GPX files.

The GMAP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GMAP converter.
