About MPZ files
The .mpz extension creates a unique challenge because it serves two completely different industries: mobile mapping and architectural design. Most commonly (approx. 60%), it is a Map Plus compressed map package used by the iOS app developed by Miocool. These files are essentially ZIP containers holding map tiles, custom layers, and XML configuration data designed for offline navigation. Users often struggle to open these on a desktop because the OS does not recognize the extension, effectively locking valuable geospatial data inside a mobile-only format. Converting these involves treating the file as a standard archive to extract the internal PNG or JPG map tiles and KML data for use in software like Google Earth.
Alternatively, an .mpz file may be a proprietary 2D CAD drawing created by CADIX M-Draf software. Unlike the map format, this is a Microsoft Compound File binary used in Japanese engineering and construction markets. The primary friction here is strict software dependency; these files are often incompatible with standard AutoCAD workflows. To collaborate or archive these drawings, users typically need to convert them to widely supported formats like PDF for viewing or DXF for editing in other CAD platforms. Less frequently, the extension is used by Miradi for conservation project management or the game Red Eclipse for map packages, both of which also utilize zip-compression.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MPZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MPZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MPZ converter.
