About GMO files
The .gmo file extension primarily acts as a Game Model Object used to store 3D assets for the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP). These proprietary files contain 3D meshes, textures, bones, and animation data specifically optimized for the legacy PSP hardware architecture. A secondary, but common, use for .gmo is as a Compiled GNU Gettext Message Catalog (which is structurally identical to MO files). This variation stores binary software translation data used by the GNU gettext localization system.
Users frequently need to convert .gmo files because both primary formats are highly restrictive. PSP game models are closed, proprietary binary blobs. Modern 3D suites like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot import them directly. Reverse-engineering tools or specialized visualization software, such as Noesis, are required to view the geometry and extract it. Similarly, the GNU Gettext .gmo is a compiled binary file that human translators cannot read or edit; it must be decompiled first.
For 3D workflows, the most reliable conversion targets are OBJ for static meshes, or FBX and DAE if you need to retain rigging and skeletal animation data. Be aware that specific PSP hardware material properties are often lost or incorrectly mapped during export. For localization files, the only logical target is the uncompiled PO text format.
Because .gmo files are usually either proprietary game engine archives or compiled machine-readable binaries, standard online converters consistently fail to process them. Our system analyzes the internal hex signature to determine if your file is a 3D asset or a translation catalog, helping you apply the correct extraction tool.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GMO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GMO file to JS, TS, PY, JAVA, CPP, C, CS, PHP, RB, GO, RS or SWIFT, you can use Noesis or similar software from the "PlayStation Portable 3D Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to GMO, try Noesis or another comparable tool in the "PlayStation Portable 3D Model" category.
The GMO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GMO converter.
