Extract text from GMO files
To convert your GMO file to another format, you need Noesis or other Game software.
To convert other file formats to the "3D Model Container" file type, you need software like Noesis or a similar tool.
A .gmo file typically serves one of two distinct technical functions, depending on its origin. Most commonly (approx. 84%), it is a Game Model Object, a proprietary 3D container format used to store character meshes, textures, and rigging data for Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) games. These files are highly optimized for the PSP's specific hardware architecture, making them unreadable by standard 3D suites like Blender or Autodesk Maya without intermediate extraction. The real problem for modders is that .gmo files often contain baked-in skeleton data that breaks when forcibly imported into modern engines. To edit or 3D print these assets, you must convert them to widely supported exchange formats like OBJ or FBX.
Alternatively, in software development environments (approx. 7%), a .gmo file represents a GNU Machine Object. This is a binary, compiled translation file generated from a human-readable PO (Portable Object) text file using the GNU gettext system. Developers often try to open these in text editors only to find garbled binary data. To modify the translations, you cannot edit the .gmo directly; you must locate the original source PO file or decompile the .gmo back to text format.
