About GB1 files
A .gb1 file is an automatic backup of a game project created by legacy versions of GameMaker (specifically versions 7, 8, and 8.1).
Users typically encounter this file after a crash or corruption of their main project file (GMK or GM81). The practical constraint is that Windows and modern GameMaker Studio versions often do not recognize the .gb1 extension directly as a valid project to open. It is essentially a "safety copy" that is locked away behind an obscure extension. To use it, you generally need to rename the extension back to its original format or import it into a legacy editor. Friction points include the inability to double-click to open, version mismatches (e.g., trying to open a legacy backup in GameMaker Studio 2), and the confusion of having multiple backups (GB2, GB3, etc.) without knowing which is the most recent.
Best Target Formats:
- For Editing (Restoration): Convert (rename) to GM81 or GMK to open in the original software.
- For Modern Development: Import into GameMaker Studio to upgrade the project to a .YYP or GMX format (note: this may require manual code fixes).
- For Archiving: Compress into ZIP alongside the assets to preserve the project history.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GB1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted GMR, GM6 and GM1 files.
The GB1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GB1 converter.
