About GMR files
The .GMR extension is primarily associated with iGo Navigation software as a GPS Raster Map. These files function as background layers for GPS units, storing static visual data rather than vector-based routing information.
The primary difficulty for users is that .GMR files are highly proprietary and optimized strictly for embedded navigation hardware. They cannot be opened by standard image viewers like Windows Photo Viewer or geospatial tools like QGIS without specific plugins or conversion. This "black box" nature makes it difficult to verify map details, back up region data, or migrate maps to modern devices. For archiving or viewing purposes, the best workflow is converting the raster content to standard image formats like JPG, PNG, or TIFF.
Alternatively, a .GMR file may be a legacy GameMaker Room file created by older versions of GameMaker (specifically versions 6.0 through 8.1). These files define the layout of a game level, including object placement, tiles, and background settings. As a deprecated format, modern engines like GameMaker Studio 2 do not support them natively without a conversion process. Users often need to convert these to modern project formats or extract the visual layout as a PNG to reference the original level design without installing obsolete software.

The GMR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GMR converter.
