A .gld file is most frequently a Photometric Luminaire Data file used by DIALux, the industry-standard software for professional lighting design. These files contain critical data describing how a light fixture distributes light (Luminous Intensity Distribution), utilized by architects and engineers to simulate lighting scenarios in 3D environments. While essential for accurate rendering, .gld files are highly specialized; they cannot be opened by standard image viewers or text editors, creating friction for users who simply need to view the luminaire specs without installing the massive DIALux suite.
In developer circles, a .gld file is often an MPLAB Linker Script used by Microchip MPLAB X IDE. These are plain text configuration files that tell the linker how to map program code into the microcontroller's memory. Users often struggle to open them because Windows does not associate the extension with a text editor by default.
Less commonly, the file may be a Ground Loop Design project file created by GLD Software for geothermal heat pump design. For most users, the goal is to convert these unreadable formats into accessible documentation.
