About GI files
A .GI file is most frequently a Global Image disc image, a legacy format originally created by Prassi and utilized by Roxio (formerly Sonic Solutions) software like Easy CD Creator. These files represent a sector-by-sector copy of an optical disc (CD or DVD). While they served their purpose in the Windows XP era, they present significant friction today: modern operating systems like Windows 11 cannot natively mount or burn them, and the original software is often obsolete or costly. Users frequently encounter these files when digging through old backups, only to find they are locked out of their data due to proprietary formatting. Another common issue is that .GI images are sometimes split into multiple segments (e.g., file.gi, file(1).gi), complicating the mounting process if a segment is missing. For long-term access and archiving, the best course of action is converting these images to the standard ISO format, which is universally supported by modern OS tools and virtualization software. Less commonly, a .GI file might be a configuration file for the Valve Source Engine or a Global Illumination cache for Cinema 4D. Check your file header; if it is text-readable, it is likely a game configuration script.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted GI_, VPK, TXT, C4D, JPG, PDF, ZIP, BAC, IF, 113, MI, GB and ISO files.
The GI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GI converter.
