About MI files
The .mi file extension primarily identifies a 2D CAD drawing or 3D model associated with PTC Creo Elements/Direct Modeling. Historically, this format originated in legacy CAD systems like CoCreate ME10 and SolidDesigner. These files store highly precise technical vector data, manufacturing instructions, and part geometry used in mechanical engineering. In rarer cases, .mi files operate as MicroStation drawings, Agilent microscopy data, or even game material files for CryEngine.
The main disadvantage of the .mi format is its strict, proprietary nature. Opening a native CoCreate or PTC Creo file requires a heavy, expensive commercial CAD license. If a vendor or manufacturer sends you an .mi file, you cannot open it in a web browser, standard document viewer, or even default OS previewers. Furthermore, modern lightweight CAD viewers often struggle with older .mi iterations due to legacy codebases.
To make these technical drawings accessible, conversion is mandatory. For editing and engineering collaboration in tools like AutoCAD, convert .mi to DWG or DXF. This ensures vectors and layer hierarchies remain intact. For archiving, printing, or sharing with non-technical stakeholders, convert the file to PDF. If you need to embed a quick preview on a website, convert it to a raster format like PNG or JPG. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MI file to KM or GI, you can use PTC Creo or similar software from the "CAD Drawing File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert files to MI, try PTC Creo or another comparable tool in the "CAD Drawing File" category.
The MI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MI converter.
