The .gf file extension represents a highly fragmented and proprietary set of data formats. Most commonly, it is encountered as a scanned cheque image generated by Banco do Brasil banking software, which internally uses the JFIF (JPEG) compression standard. Alternatively, it may be a Universal Secure File Transfer archive created by Galois, Inc, a legacy PNG graphic file used by Adobe ImageReady, or a Generic Font bitmap generated by the METAFONT typography system in TeX.
Because the .gf extension is shared across entirely unrelated applications, users frequently experience compatibility failures. Modern operating systems do not have a default program associated with it. Relying on the original proprietary software, such as legacy banking portals or discontinued Adobe tools, is often impractical or impossible.
