About FRT files
The .FRT extension typically refers to two distinct file types used in professional environments: Leica Geosystems survey formats and legacy Microsoft Visual FoxPro reports.
1. Leica Geosystems Format File (Primary)
For surveyors and civil engineers, an FRT file is a Format Definition File used by Leica Geo Office and Leica total stations.
- The Problem: This file does not contain your survey data (coordinates/measurements). Instead, it acts as a template or rulebook that tells your Leica instrument how to export raw data into a readable format (like CSV or GSI). You cannot "convert" an FRT file into an image or document because it is essentially a script for formatting data.
- The Solution: To see your data, you must load this FRT file into your Leica instrument or Format Manager software alongside your raw data source. If you need to edit the format itself, use the Leica Format Manager to modify how columns are arranged before exporting to TXT or DXF for AutoCAD.
2. Microsoft FoxPro Report Memo (Legacy)
In the context of database management, an FRT file is the Report Memo associated with a FRX report file created by Microsoft Visual FoxPro.
- The Problem: FoxPro is discontinued software. The FRT file holds the text strings and layout logic for a report, but it is unreadable without the accompanying FRX file and the original software.
- The Solution: For archiving, users often need to convert these reports into static formats. While direct conversion is difficult without FoxPro, specialized database recovery tools can convert the report output to PDF or extract the memo text to RTF or TXT for preservation.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FRT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted FRX, RTF, FRW, FRF, RTM, TXT, LRF, FIG, TEXINFO, GZ and AM files.
The FRT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FRT converter.
