About FRA files

The .FRA extension is a classic example of file format collision, most frequently serving as a localization or configuration text file for projects built with Unreal Engine. While these files technically contain readable text (often encoded in UTF-16 LE), they are structured for the engine's internal parsers, making manual editing in standard editors like Notepad++ prone to encoding errors and corruption.

Alternatively, in engineering environments, a .FRA file is likely a Mechanism Analysis Animation created by PTC Creo (formerly Pro/ENGINEER). These are proprietary binary files used to store playback data for assembly simulations. The major drawback here is accessibility: you cannot view a Creo .FRA file without a license for the specific CAD suite, which is overkill for simply reviewing an animation.

Less commonly, this format stores Frequency Response Analysis data from scientific instruments like the OMICRON FRAnalyzer.

The FRA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FRA converter.
