About FPT files

Most often, an .FPT file is a FoxPro Memo file, an essential auxiliary component for Visual FoxPro databases. While standard DBF files store structured data in a table, they have strict character limits for text fields. The .FPT file bypasses this by storing variable-length textual data (memos) or binary objects (BLOBs) that are too large for the main table.

Why users struggle with this format:
1. Dependency Issues: The .FPT file is not standalone. It functions solely as a sidecar to a DBF file. Without the parent DBF, the memo file is unreadable; conversely, if the .FPT is missing, the database will report corruption.
2. Obsolescence: Microsoft Visual FoxPro was discontinued in 2007, making these files increasingly difficult to access on modern systems without specialized legacy software.
3. Ambiguity: A distinct subset of these files are virtual pinball tables created for Future Pinball. These are completely unrelated to databases and require specific simulation software to run.

The FPT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FPT converter.
